Guided Fishing Trip FAQ’s
For many anglers, booking a guided fly fishing trip is something they’ve looked forward to for years. For others, it might be their very first time hiring a guide or fishing Montana waters. Either way, we get a lot of the same questions throughout the year from new and returning clients alike.
We figured it would be helpful to answer a few of the most common questions we hear before folks step into the boat.
Do I Need To Be An Experienced Fly Fisherman?
Absolutely not.
One of the biggest misconceptions about guided fishing trips is that you need years of experience before hiring a guide. The truth is, guided trips are often the best way to learn. We work with anglers of all skill levels throughout the season, from complete beginners to seasoned fly fishermen who travel the West every year.
A good guide adjusts the day to fit the angler. Some days involve teaching the basics of casting, reading water, and understanding river etiquette. Other days are more technical and focused on improving presentation, targeting larger fish, or learning advanced techniques.
No matter your experience level, the goal is the same — enjoy a great day on the water and learn something along the way.
What Should I Bring?
For most day trips, you really don’t need to overthink it.
We typically provide rods, reels, flies, terminal tackle, and all the gear needed for the day unless you prefer to bring your own equipment. What clients should focus on is dressing appropriately and being comfortable.
A few essentials we always recommend include:
Rain jacket
Polarized sunglasses
Sunscreen
Hat
Layers for changing weather
Camera or phone for photos
Montana fishing license
Montana weather can change quickly, especially during spring and fall. We’ve had days start below freezing and end in short sleeves.
Will We Catch Fish?
This is probably the most common question we get, and the honest answer is: hopefully.
Fishing is still fishing. Some days are lights out and others can humble even the best anglers. Weather conditions, water levels, temperatures, and fish behavior all play a role.
What we can promise is that our guides work hard to put anglers in the best possible position for success. We spend every day on these rivers watching conditions change in real time. Even on tougher days, there’s usually something to learn and appreciate about being on the water.
Truthfully, many of our returning clients come back as much for the overall experience as they do the fishing itself.
What Does A Typical Guided Day Look Like?
Every trip is a little different depending on the river, season, and style of fishing, but most days start with meeting your guide in the morning before heading to the launch.
From there, the day usually includes a full float down one of Montana’s rivers, stopping along the way to fish productive water, eat lunch, and enjoy the scenery. Depending on conditions, we may fish dry flies, nymphs, streamers, or a combination throughout the day.
Some days involve lots of casting from the boat, while others include getting out and wade fishing certain sections.
Most importantly, the day moves at a comfortable pace. We want clients to relax, enjoy themselves, and soak in the experience.
Should I Bring My Own Gear?
If you have gear you enjoy fishing with, by all means bring it along. Most anglers like fishing their own rods if they’re comfortable with them.
That said, there’s no pressure to own expensive equipment before booking a trip. We keep quality rods and reels available for clients and are happy to provide everything needed for the day.
In many cases, trying different setups with a guide can actually help anglers decide what equipment fits them best before making purchases on their own.
When Is The Best Time To Fish In Montana?
There’s honestly no single perfect answer because every part of the season offers something different.
Spring often brings some of our best opportunities for larger trout and fewer crowds. Summer is known for great dry fly fishing, warmer weather, and longer days. Fall offers beautiful scenery, aggressive fish, and some of the most enjoyable days of the year on the river.
The “best” time often depends on what kind of experience you’re looking for.
Do Guided Trips Include Lunch?
Most full-day trips include lunch and drinks on the river. Shore lunches are one of those underrated parts of a good fishing day — taking a break, stretching your legs, and swapping stories while the river keeps moving beside you.
If you have dietary restrictions or preferences, we’re always happy to accommodate whenever possible.
Why Hire A Guide Instead Of Fishing On My Own?
Montana has incredible public access and plenty of opportunities for anglers willing to explore on their own. But hiring a guide can dramatically shorten the learning curve, especially on unfamiliar water.
Guides spend countless days figuring out seasonal patterns, productive sections of river, fly selection, and changing conditions. Instead of spending valuable vacation time trying to locate fish, clients can focus on fishing and enjoying the day.
For many people, it’s also simply about making the most of limited time in Montana.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, guided fishing trips are about more than numbers or photos. They’re about spending time outdoors, learning new water, sharing good conversations, and experiencing Montana rivers the right way.
If you’ve been thinking about booking a trip but still have questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re always happy to help anglers feel prepared and comfortable before they arrive.
We look forward to seeing you on the water.
